Melbourne, November 2013

1. My taste has changed slightly, trying to avoid suede and tassles for more of what's on the left. Textured, soft leather shoes that are classic and timeless.

2. I ended up choosing these. Nappa Moorea, Nastro Bowling.

3a. Rice Queen. Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

3b. Holding David Byrne's How Music Works in Brunswick Street.

5. Old habits die hard, a neckerchief helps me to stay warm.

6. Parliament of Victoria.

Lionfest 2010 (Sydney, Australia)

Yesterday I attended Lionfest 2010, an event that showcased many performances from various martial arts (primarily Kung Fu) schools. Lion Dancing, of course was to be the main focus of the day. This ancient Chinese sport continues to feature regularly in festivals and events all around the world, it's definitely had a huge presence in my life, which is why in the pictures of today's post I will try and convey to you the happiness which the Lion tends to bring to everyday life.

The symbolism of the Lion for this particular post is the modern day Gentleman, charming and stoic, with a touch of flamboyancy (based on the behind the scenes photos of the performers).

Legstand on benches

Senior performers run through their routine consisting of three lions. Working with the modern Gentleman motif we could say the style and grace represents the Lion dance almost like a Chinese equivalent of the traditional Waltz..

Darling Girl (1957)

When I decided to change this picture from colour into black and white I had no idea of what the consequences would be- in this case it happened to be good ones! Old school suaveness, depicting various styles and cultures from the past.

1. Shirt by Uniqlo, 2. Scarf by SABA, 3. Coat by Lane Crawford, 4. Pocket square by Chorley's

My outfit is by no means historically accurate, however I believe that the cravat, overcoat, pocket square and brushed back hair gave me a 1950s Hong Kong flavour, I started to think jazz clubs and Chinese Swing dancing in America- like the segment in 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story'

(Above: Bruce Lee dancing the cha cha with Diana Chang Chung-wen, 1964)

My other inspiration was Fred Astaire..

(Below: Fred Astaire, 1940. Included because of the use of the 'Astaire' folding of the pocket square seen on my overcoat)

Tokyo 2008 + Tokyo 2009

Inspired by The Sartorialist's current book signing in Japan, I've decided to pull out some photos of my trip to Tokyo in both 2008 and 2009.

What an experience it was! To be honest, thinking back, my first trip in August 2008 definitely shaped and contributed a lot to the way in which I choose to experience men's style today, I will never forget seeing the combination of young men in Comme Des Garcons, Nike hi-top sneakers up against dapper businessmen styled in Tom Ford, Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren!

Paired Up: The Classic Polo & Knit Tie

Ever wonder what your Polo would look like worn with a tie? well here it is! I wanted to make this an easy transition which meant matching the fabric and textures, hence the knit tie! This is a combination that doesn't look over the top, but it's updated, preppy chic! However, bringing this sort of innovation to the office may not be welcomed with open arms! Instead this look is best left for a day of afternoon drinks in the city, a more transitional period of the day where you want to look relaxed and effortless yet maintain a certain degree of professionality.
